What it is

RimWorld is a single-player sci-fi colony-management simulation where you guide a handful of crash-landed survivors as an AI 'storyteller' throws crises at them. Day to day play is building, farming, research, and keeping colonists fed and sane, but the simulation runs deep and dark: firefights and melee combat leave blood and severed limbs, and the game lets you capture prisoners, enslave people, harvest and sell their organs, butcher humans for food, and craft goods from human leather. Colonists grow and use drugs and alcohol with realistic addiction and overdose, form romances that can lead to pregnancy, and can appear naked. Optional expansions add cosmic-horror content with eldritch monsters and rituals. There are no ads, microtransactions, or online interaction with other players.

How it's framed

The game presents itself as a neutral 'story generator' that simulates consequences without moral commentary — dark options like slavery, organ harvesting, and cannibalism are mechanically available and often carry in-game mood penalties for colonists, but the game neither condemns nor endorses them, leaving choices and their fallout entirely to the player.
