What it is

Rise of Nations: Extended Edition is a real-time strategy game that spans the whole sweep of human history, from the ancient era to the modern information age. Players build cities, gather resources, research technologies, expand their borders, and raise armies to conquer eighteen playable civilizations. The on-screen action is army-scale and viewed from above: units march, fire arrows or guns, and are destroyed in combat, escalating over the ages to cannons, tanks, aircraft, and even nuclear strikes, but the fighting is abstract and bloodless with no gore or graphic injury. There is a single-player 'Conquer the World' campaign and online multiplayer against other people, but no sexual content, strong language, substances, or microtransactions.

How it's framed

The game frames warfare, empire-building, and conquest as a historical strategy exercise. Combat is presented tactically and abstractly rather than for shock, with the focus on economy, expansion, and outmaneuvering opponents; violence is a means to territorial and military victory and is never dwelt on graphically.
