The player commands military forces — tanks, aircraft, warships and infantry — that fire on and destroy each other, shown top-down as small units and explosions with no blood, visible wounds or gore.
The setting is an alternate-history Cold War turned hot, with national invasions and large-scale warfare as the subject matter; it is presented abstractly through unit maneuvers rather than any depicted personal suffering.
Wargame: Red Dragon is a large-scale real-time strategy game set in an alternate-history Cold War that turns hot across East Asia. Viewed from a top-down battlefield perspective, the player builds a deck of Cold War-era military units — infantry, armour, artillery, aircraft and naval forces drawn from many real nations — then deploys and maneuvers them to hold zones and defeat an opposing army. Combat is abstract and distant: units fire on one another and are destroyed in explosions, with no blood, gore or human injury shown up close. The single-player campaigns are self-contained war scenarios, and the game also offers competitive and cooperative online play with in-game voice and text chat.
The game frames warfare as a matter of tactics and logistics rather than personal violence: units are assets with fuel, ammunition and morale to be managed, and success is measured in territory held and enemy forces destroyed. The alternate-history conflict is presented as a strategic simulation, without dwelling on individual death or suffering.
