What it is

RuneScape is a long-running high-fantasy MMORPG set in the world of Gielinor, where you control a single human adventurer and choose your own goals across dozens of skills — combat, mining, fishing, crafting, thieving, trading and questing. Combat against monsters and other players is core but optional in emphasis, and it is presented abstractly through point-and-click actions and stylised hit-number damage rather than blood or wounds. The world includes alcohol you can brew and drink for stat effects, a Thieving skill built around pickpocketing and stealing, undead and demon-themed areas and quests, and hunting of ordinary animals. It is played online alongside thousands of strangers with open in-game text chat, private messaging and free player trading. The game funds itself with a subscription plus an extensive real-money store, including cosmetics, tradeable bonds and the randomised Treasure Hunter mechanic.

How it's framed

The game frames its content lightly and adventurously: violence is a skill to train rather than a source of shock, drinking and thieving are mechanical systems with in-game consequences rather than moral commentary, and darker quest material is delivered through lore and fantasy conflict. Its monetisation is presented as convenience and reward — daily keys, limited-time promotions and purchasable progress sit alongside normal play rather than being hidden.
