What it is

The Callisto Protocol is a third-person survival-horror game set on a prison colony on one of Jupiter's moons in the year 2320. You play Jacob, a captured freighter pilot who must escape after a disease turns the inmates into monstrous creatures. The game is defined by its extremely graphic violence: you fight infected enemies with melee strikes, firearms, and a gravity tool that hurls them into spikes and grinders, while the protagonist himself dies in exceptionally gruesome, drawn-out animations. Expect constant gore, dismemberment, heavy body horror, jump scares, a bleak and disturbing story of human experimentation, and occasional strong profanity. It is a single-player experience with no online interaction or purchases.

How it's framed

The game frames its extreme violence as desperate survival and self-defense against infected attackers, and presents the human experimentation behind the outbreak as a corporate atrocity the player uncovers and opposes rather than celebrates. The gore is stylized for shock and horror-genre spectacle.
