What it is

The Outlast Trials is a first-person psychological survival horror game, playable solo or in four-player co-op, set in a 1959 Cold War facility where a corrupt corporation kidnaps people and forces them through terrifying 'trials.' There is no real combat: players sneak past and evade deranged human enemies, using night-vision goggles and thrown bricks or bottles only to distract or briefly stun pursuers. Content is intense and graphic, including bloody violence, dismembered and nude bodies, torture, drug-fueled human experimentation, frequent strong profanity, and grotesque sexualized horror imagery, all wrapped in a bleak atmosphere of dread and helplessness. Online play adds voice and text chat with strangers; cosmetics are earned with in-game currency and there are no real-money purchases.

How it's framed

The game frames its violence and cruelty critically, casting the player as a powerless victim of a heartless corporation and using the horror to portray exploitation, manipulation, and the loss of one's humanity as monstrous rather than glorified.
