What it is

Baby Steps is a single-player walking-simulator comedy in which you play Nate, a listless 35-year-old man in a onesie who is transported to a surreal open landscape and must reach a distant mountain by manually lifting and placing each foot to keep his balance. Falling loses hard-won progress, and the humor is crass and awkward: frequent strong profanity, mild toggleable nudity, half-clothed donkey characters, gross-out gags about needing to pee and a dirt-accumulating costume, and passing drug references (donkeys begging for cigarettes). Beneath the comedy runs a melancholic thread about a lonely, socially anxious man who at one point wishes he were dead. There is no combat, no monetization, and no online or chat features.

How it's framed

The game frames its awkward, self-deprecating humor and its protagonist's depression and social anxiety as a wry metaphor for perseverance in life — falling down, adjusting perspective, and getting back up. The bleak moment where Nate wishes to die is presented soberly within a story that ultimately turns toward small human connection rather than being played for shock.
