What it is

DUSK is a retro-styled first-person shooter that mimics the fast, blocky look and feel of 1990s classics like Doom and Quake. Playing a nameless treasure hunter, you fight through rural Pennsylvania towns, industrial facilities, and a nightmarish otherworld against gun-toting cultists, possessed soldiers, demonic livestock, and stranger horrors, using an arsenal of shotguns, rifles, sickles, and magical weapons. Combat is the whole game: enemies spray pixelated blood and explode into gibs when hit hard enough. The tone is Lovecraftian horror, with a story about a cult, demonic possession, human remains ground up for power, and an ancient Outer God. It is primarily single-player; a small online deathmatch mode called DuskWorld supports up to 16 players with chat enabled. There are no in-app purchases.

How it's framed

The game frames its violence as pulpy, high-speed arcade action rather than realism, leaning into over-the-top gore and a knowingly nostalgic retro aesthetic. Its horror and occult content are presented as atmosphere and adversaries to overcome; the cult and its demonic god are the antagonists the player battles, though the ending has the protagonist inherit the cult leader's corrupting power.
