Alcohol is central: the player builds stills, brews booze, and stores and trades it, and dwarves must drink regularly to work well.
Combat between dwarves, invaders, wildlife and monsters is resolved in detailed text and static sprites, with wounds, bleeding and battlefield deaths as routine events.
Dwarves suffer grief, stress, and mental breakdowns from trauma and loss, and colonies routinely end in mass death.
In adventure mode the player character can steal from or kill townsfolk, and world history records murders and thefts by NPCs.
In extreme despair a dwarf's mental state can deteriorate to the point of taking their own life, described in text.
Combat can sever limbs and cause specific body-part injuries, reported in the written combat log.
Emergent threats include undead raised by necromancers, werecreatures, and deep-dwelling monsters that can wipe out a fortress.
Animals are hunted, butchered for food and materials, and trained as war beasts as ordinary gameplay.
Dwarf Fortress is a deep colony-building and simulation game set in a procedurally generated fantasy world. You manage a group of dwarves as they dig, build, farm, brew, craft, and defend against threats, with everything represented by small pixel sprites (or optional ASCII) and, crucially, by dense text describing what is happening. There are no win conditions; colonies eventually fall, often catastrophically. Content is largely conveyed in writing: combat with wounds and severed limbs, dwarves who become drunk, stressed, grief-stricken, or who die by their own hand during breakdowns, and the hunting and butchering of animals. Alcohol production and consumption is a core, required mechanic. There is no sexual content, nudity, profanity, or monetization, and the game is entirely single-player with no online chat.
The game frames its content as a neutral, emergent simulation rather than a designed narrative: it presents systems and lets consequences unfold without praising or condemning any outcome. Violence, death, alcohol, and dwarven despair are recorded as matter-of-fact events in the world's history, and the community's own motto, 'Losing is Fun,' reflects that failure and disaster are treated as story fuel rather than moral judgments.
