Cartoonish top-down gunfights against sentient bullet-shaped enemies (Gundead); characters shoot, roll, and flip tables with no realistic gore.
The framing quest is to obtain a gun that can 'kill the past' — each playable character carries regret over a death or failure they want to erase.
Enter the Gungeon is a fast-paced, top-down 'bullet hell' dungeon crawler in which one to two players guide a misfit adventurer down through a procedurally generated, firearms-themed dungeon called the Gungeon. Combat is the core of the game: you dodge-roll through walls of enemy fire, flip tables for cover, and blast waves of comical bullet-shaped enemies with a huge, often absurd arsenal (everything from ordinary pistols to a mailbox that shoots envelopes). The violence is cartoonish and bloodless — foes burst into shell casings — and the tone is whimsical and pun-heavy. There is no sexual content, nudity, profanity, substances, or real-money spending. A gentle melancholy runs beneath the humor, since the heroes descend in search of a legendary gun that can 'kill the past' and undo their personal regrets. Co-op is played together locally rather than through online chat, so there is no interaction with strangers.
The game frames its endless gunfights as lighthearted, slapstick action set in a world where the enemies are anthropomorphic ammunition, keeping violence abstract and comedic rather than realistic. Its more serious thread — characters chasing a weapon that can rewrite their past mistakes — is presented earnestly as a story of regret and redemption, but stays understated and never dwells on graphic or disturbing detail.
