Lightyear Frontier is a relaxing open-world farming game in which you pilot a small mech on a peaceful alien planet. You plant and harvest crops, gather resources, build and automate a homestead, and clear overgrown invasive plant growths from the landscape. There is no human combat, no blood, and no distressing subject matter — the mech's tools are used for farming tasks and for pulling or blasting weed-like plants, not for fighting people or animals. Wildlife in the world is friendly and can be observed or befriended rather than harmed. The game can be played solo or cooperatively with up to three other players, with voice and text chat available in shared sessions. There are no in-game purchases.
The game frames its world as calm and restorative, centering tending land, building, and exploration rather than conflict. Challenge comes from resource management and cleaning up an overgrown environment, and the tone throughout is gentle and non-threatening.
