Top-down spell combat against goblins, orcs and monsters where enemies bleed and burst apart in a comedic, stylised way when killed.
The backstory rests on the devastating Wizard Wars, which left most wizards dead and the survivors mad or hostile.
Man-eating crabs and beast-like creatures are fought as ordinary enemies during play.
Magicka 2 is a comedic top-down co-op action-adventure for one to four players who take on the roles of wizards restoring order to a Norse-flavoured fantasy world. The core of the game is a freeform spell-crafting system: players combine elements on the fly to hurl fire, ice, lightning and more at hordes of goblins, orcs and monsters, often setting off chaotic chain reactions that harm allies as easily as enemies. Combat is fast and stylised, with enemies bleeding and bursting apart in an exaggerated, cartoonish way. The tone throughout is light and self-mocking, with pop-culture jokes woven into a loose quest to protect a prophesied child. Online co-op play with others is supported through a publisher account, but there is no in-game voice or text chat.
The game frames its violence as slapstick chaos rather than serious combat: friendly fire, accidental deaths and absurd magical mishaps are treated as the main source of comedy. Its darker backdrop of magical war and mad wizards sits in the lore and is played mostly for humour, not menace.
