What it is
Orcs Must Die! is a fantasy action-strategy game blending tower defense with third-person combat. Playing a lone War Mage, you defend magical rifts from waves of orcs, ogres, and other monsters by laying spiked, fiery, and crushing traps around the level and finishing survivors off with weapons and spells. The killing is constant but cartoonish and played for laughs, with comic blood spray and over-the-top trap deaths; the tone is lighthearted and humorous throughout. There is only mild profanity, no sexual content, and the enemies are fantasy monsters rather than people or animals.
How it's framed
The game frames the slaughter of orcs as heroic, comedic, and rewarded — the hero quips as he racks up kills, and score, upgrades, and 'skulls' are earned for defeating the monster horde defending the human world. Violence is stylized and exaggerated rather than realistic, and the enemies are presented as an unintelligent invading swarm.
