What it is

Sea of Thieves is a first-person, shared-world pirate adventure where you and up to three crewmates sail a ship across an open ocean, completing voyages for in-game trading companies, digging up buried treasure, and battling skeletons and sea monsters. Because the world is shared, you will run into other real players — sometimes teaming up in alliances, sometimes fighting them for their loot in cannon-blazing naval battles. Combat is stylized and bloodless-to-mild, the tone is lighthearted and comedic (including drinking grog until your pirate stumbles and throws up), and there is no sexual content, nudity, or in-game profanity. The main things to be aware of are open voice and text chat with strangers and an optional real-money cosmetic shop.

How it's framed

The game frames piracy as playful, cartoonish adventure rather than serious wrongdoing — stealing treasure and sinking rival ships is the point of the fantasy, rewarded with gold and cosmetic prestige, and death is a temporary, whimsical trip to a ghost ferry. Drunkenness on grog is played for comedy. There is no real-world moralizing, and violence is kept stylized and consequence-light.
