What it is

Sniper Elite 3 is a third-person tactical stealth shooter set during the World War 2 campaign in North Africa. Playing as an Allied sniper, you scout large open levels, sneak past or eliminate enemy soldiers, plant traps and mines, and take long-range rifle shots that account for wind, distance, and bullet drop. Its trademark feature is an X-ray 'kill cam' that follows a well-placed bullet in slow motion and shows it tearing through bone and organs in graphic detail, including targeted body shots. Combat is against human enemies with blood; the game can be played solo or in online co-op and competitive multiplayer, though this version has no built-in voice or text chat.

How it's framed

The game frames its violence as skilled, rewarded marksmanship: precise and gory kills are celebrated with an anatomical slow-motion camera, and the player fights on the Allied side against Axis forces in a straightforward wartime mission structure. The story is thin and does little to editorialize; the focus is on the mechanics and spectacle of sniping.
