Realistic firearm and melee combat against zombie hordes and rival human survivors, with blood but no emphasized gore or dismemberment.
Survival-horror atmosphere with zombie enemies stalking abandoned urban environments.
A post-apocalyptic setting after a deadly pandemic collapses society, with survivors scavenging a ruined city.
The Day Before was an online open-world survival game set in a present-day United States devastated by a pandemic that turned much of the population into zombies. Players explored a post-apocalyptic city, scavenged for gear and supplies, fought off zombies, and could encounter and fight other human players while trying to survive and rebuild. The core content is realistic ranged and melee combat against undead and human enemies with blood effects, wrapped in a bleak survival-horror tone. It featured online play with voice and text chat among strangers. The game launched in early access in December 2023, was widely panned, and was pulled from sale within days as the studio shut down.
Combat is framed as survival: the player fights zombies and competes with other survivors for scarce resources in a collapsed world, without narrative reward for harming innocents. The horror and bleakness serve the post-apocalyptic survival premise rather than being dwelt on graphically.
