What it is

A zombie apocalypse sets the stage for this open-world survival title, which remains in early access and can be played solo or cooperatively over the internet. Players search deserted buildings to gather supplies, construct and keep up a shelter, raise crops and prepare meals, and juggle limited resources while an advancing fog steadily makes the world more hazardous. Fighting pits the player against both the undead and aggressive human survivors, with blood depicted on screen, and staying fed also involves hunting wild animals, processing the carcasses, and cooking what they yield. Multiplayer sessions let participants talk by voice and exchange typed messages, and the game contains nothing purchasable with real money.

How it's framed

Fighting is portrayed as something forced on the player rather than a thing to glory in: combat occurs because the undead and dangerous humans pose a threat, and killing animals for meat is depicted as a matter of feeding oneself. The game passes no judgment on any of these acts — what its systems reward is remaining alive, nourished, and under a roof, and peril can be sidestepped or handled from a distance as readily as met head-on.
