What it is

Returnal is a third-person sci-fi shooter with roguelike structure and psychological-horror themes. You play Selene, an astronaut stranded on a shifting alien planet and caught in a death-and-rebirth time loop, fighting hostile alien creatures with high-tech weapons through dense bullet-hell attacks. Combat is intense and shows blood, and the player keeps stumbling on the corpses of her earlier deaths. The heavier weight is emotional and unsettling: hallucinated visits to a childhood home, a ghostly apparition, and a story that unspools into grief, guilt and a traumatic memory of a car crashing into a lake with a child drowning. Spoken dialogue includes strong profanity. It is primarily a single-player game; a later update added two-player online co-op, but there is no built-in chat.

How it's framed

The game presents its violence as survival against alien threats and treats its darkest material — loss, guilt, and a repeating trauma — as a mystery to be pieced together through visions and environmental storytelling rather than sensationalized. The horror leans on dread and ambiguity, and the narrative frames Selene's suffering as something to understand rather than celebrate.
